SETUniverse

SETUniverse is SETU’s initiative to facilitate the accurate alignment and interplay of physical and digital worlds on and across the University campuses. The overall ambition is for it to be co-created, engaging and useful to all stakeholders within the institution – operations, education and training, research and innovation.

SETUniverse will be an integrated and open platform of connected, purposeful and trustworthy Digital Twin models with a Mixed Reality (MR) interface for the University landscape comprising of its built environment, infrastructure and biodiversity. It will incorporate Artificial Intelligence (AI) with verifiable Geospatial Data, Information and Knowledge sources (including GIS and BIM) – legacy and new, static, dynamic and simulated.

The Digital Twinning of the University’s built environment will include the existing campuses situated in Waterford, Carlow, Wexford, Kilkenny and Wicklow and their respective use by students and staff. The Infrastructure challenge will include all forms of Energy (sustainable and carbon-based), transport between the campuses (roads, public and private transport vehicles and routes as well as exploring more sustainable forms of transport with the potential use of the river) and Services above and below ground (water, waste management and telecoms). The biodiversity element includes the University’s landscape including common and recreational green spaces and plants including tree coverage.

SETUniverse will have multiple uses, but the priority focus will be on the University’s:

  • Climate Action Plan 2024-2029 – identifying the Baseline, verifying the Transitions;
  • Facilities Management – improved Space Management, Refurbishment and ‘Living Labs;
  • Attracting more Students – Irish and International, full and part-time;
  • Development of the Enterprise Quarter – visualise Current and Future Projects

SETUniverse will adopt lessons from exemplar universities around the world. It will require a series of aligned projects in partnership with key technology providers and other universities, particularly via EU Conexus. https://www.eu-conexus.eu/en/
