DIGITAL TWIN WATERFORD (DTW)

DIGITAL TWIN WATERFORD (DTW is vital to a Smart, Intelligent, Innovative, Climate Neutral, Sustainable, Beautiful, Liveable, Vibrant, Agile and Resilient Waterford City. The overall ambition is for it to be co-created, engaging and useful to all – Citizens, Council, Business and the University.

DTW will be an integrated and open platform of connected purposeful trustworthy Digital Twin models with Mixed Reality (MR) interface for the urban landscape including buildings, infrastructure and biodiversity within the City. It will incorporate Artificial Intelligence (AI) with verifiable Geospatial Data, Information and Knowledge sources (including GIS and BIM) – legacy and new; static, dynamic and simulated.

The Urban Digital Twin of Waterford City’s landscape will include all domestic housing, educational, business offices, retail, manufacturing, as well as cultural and social venues. The infrastructural challenge will include all forms of Energy (Sustainable and Carbon-based), Transport (Roads, Cars, Buses, Rail, Boats) and Services above and below ground (Water, Waste Management and Telecoms). Incorporating the urban biodiversity will include all relevant public and private spaces and environmental assets such as rivers, recreational green spaces, and plants including tree coverage.

DTW will have multiple uses, but the priority focus will be on the City’s:

  • Climate Action Plan 2024-2029 – Identifying the Baseline and verifying the Transitions;
  • Housing for All 2030 Targets – New and Refurbishment of existing Buildings.
  • Updated Project 2040 Targets – Attracting more Citizens, new/increased Employment;
  • Better Public and Private Development Decisions – Easier to Visualise Current & Future Projects.

DTW will adopt lessons from exemplar cities around the world. It will also be part of the European Digital Infrastructure Consortium (EDIC) ‘Citiverse’ initiative that is building an EU ecosystem of advanced AI solutions for cities. https://digital-strategy.ec.europa.eu/en/factpages/citiverse
