Members of the SABRE Research Centre, Robin Stubbs, Emily Shakespeare, Sinead Barnett and Emily Kim, recently presented at the EU-CONEXUS Research Conference 2026, held in Athens, Greece. Hosted by the Agricultural University of Athens, the conference brought together researchers from across the Alliance under the theme “Challenges, Innovative Solutions and Collaborative Actions for Sustainable Urban Coastal Development.”
The SABRE team showcased research emerging from the EPA-funded Cúpla Trá project through two consecutive presentations that explored the opportunities and challenges of interdisciplinary working to create a Landscape Digital Twin (LDT) informed by deep ecological thinking and landscape biography.
The first presentation, “Twinning Ecologies: Representing More-than-Human Authors in an LDT” examined how the project’s Deep Ecology ethos and landscape biography framework seek to recognise the agency of both human and more-than-human actors within coastal landscapes. The presentation explored how these perspectives challenge conventional approaches to digital twinning and raise important questions about representation, authorship and knowledge production within digital environments.
The second presentation, “Encoding Ecologies: Technical Challenges of Representing More-than-Human Authors in an LDT,” focused on the practical challenges of translating these theoretical and philosophical concepts into a functioning digital twin. The presentation highlighted the interdisciplinary collaboration required between landscape researchers, ecologists, historians and digital modellers, and reflected on the opportunities and tensions that arise when attempting to encode complex ecological relationships, temporal change and multiple forms of knowledge within a digital platform.
The event also provided valuable opportunities for networking and collaboration with colleagues from across the EU-CONEXUS Alliance, exploring future partnerships and funding collaborative funding opportunities.
