Ukraine and Ireland: Strengthening connections through culture, diplomacy and friendship

Dr. John Wall, SETU attended a panel discussion with the Ukrainian Ambassador, Larysa Gerasko, hosted by the Ukrainian Student Society on SETU Carlow campus. There are currently 665 Ukrainian students undertaking various courses across Carlow, Wexford and Waterford campuses. The theme of the discussion was “Ukraine and Ireland: Strengthening connections through culture, diplomacy and friendship”. The Ambassador led the discussion and acknowledged the support that both Ireland and SETU is providing to Ukraine and Ukrainian students. Students spoke of their positive experiences of both Ireland and engaging with student life in SETU.

John met with Larysa Gerasko, and had the opportunity to inform the Ambassador of SETU’s engagement with the DREAMER EU project. Two partners of the project are Kyiv National University of Construction and Architecture and Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, which is her alma mater.

DREAMER which stands for Development and Reconstruction Empowerment through advanced Project Management Education & Research – is funded by the European Union through the Erasmus+ programme.  Its core aims are to support Ukraine’s rebuilding efforts, drive innovation in sustainable project management education, and foster international collaboration through shared learning and expertise.

SETU Dept Architecture & Built Environment Waterford hosted our academic partners from Ukraine in September 2025 and while the work involved sessions focused on refining module templates and structures, project implementation, and peer review of syllabus assessments as part of ongoing work on the project, these engagements also helped to build deeper academic links with our Ukrainian partners.
